A \u20ac20 Billion Bet on European AI Infrastructure<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h2>

The <\/span>Council of the European Union has approved the creation of AI Gigafactories<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/a> across the continent \u2014 large-scale, publicly co-financed compute facilities designed to train and deploy frontier AI models on European soil. The initiative sits at the centre of <\/span>InvestAI<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/a>, the Commission’s plan to mobilise roughly \u20ac200 billion in AI investment, of which \u20ac20 billion is earmarked specifically for four to five Gigafactory-scale sites.<\/span><\/p>

Each facility is expected to house more than 100,000 advanced AI processors \u2014 an order of magnitude beyond the smaller „AI Factories“ already operating under EuroHPC. The EU contribution can cover up to 17% of the capital expenditure on computing infrastructure, with the remainder expected to come from private investors and Member State co-funding. The European Investment Bank and the European Investment Fund are both structurally involved, alongside the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, which is expected to publish the formal call in summer 2026.<\/span><\/p>

Why This Matters Locally: Munich Is One of Germany’s Three Sites<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h2>

Germany has been allocated three of the ten strategic Gigafactory locations under discussion at EU level \u2014 Dresden, Frankfurt, and Munich. For organisations based in or around Munich, this is not a distant Brussels initiative: it is regional industrial policy with a concrete address.<\/span><\/p>

A Gigafactory of this scale does not arrive in isolation. It typically pulls in a surrounding ecosystem of suppliers, cleanroom and hardware partners, data-centre operators, energy infrastructure providers, skills and training programmes, and \u2014 critically for Nexuswelt’s client base \u2014 a wave of adjacent funding calls designed to build absorptive capacity around the facility before it becomes operational.<\/span><\/p>
